Every country (and state) treats Cannabis (or medical marijuana) differently. This has led to many questions from many people in our Epilepsy community regarding the potential use and efficacy of cannabis to reduce our seizures. In this episode, we try to clear up questions regarding cannabis and its future in our Epilepsy community here in the United States.
Cannabis is not a cure for Epilepsy. There is no global cure for Epilepsy. In 2018, the Food and Drug Administration (or FDA) has approved Epidiolex (a CBD-based medication) for extreme Epilepsy syndromes like Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. Since then, our Epilepsy community’s access to cannabis has become a big part of the larger debate about the legalization of marijuana. Both sides wield our community’s struggle to legitimize their own stance.
At the recording of this episode, the United States House of Representatives voted to federally legalize marijuana. That doesn’t mean it is legal, it does mean that the legislation goes on to the Senate where it will most likely be shutdown. Throughout this whole process, our community waits for Epilepsy research that shows definitively that cannabis can be used to reduce seizures in a large population.
On Which Side of the Debate do you fall?
