In this episode, we invite French Dietician Matthew Cress to the show to help clear up some of the questions that we have about the Ketogenic diet.

Initially only reserved for people with intractable (or medical-resistant) Epilepsy, the Ketogenic diet is gaining popularity for all people with Epilepsy. The Ketogenic diet can be a new tool in your toolbox in the fight against Epilepsy. You can investigate the diet even while working with your Neurologist to find the medication (or even cocktail) that works to prevent your seizures. In fact, learning about it sooner could help you in the long run.

There seems to be great variance in how the diet is tested. This variability in the percentage of Macronutrients in the tests makes it difficult to tie down exactly how and how often the diet works. However, numerous studies have proven that the diet does work for some people.

In fact, in one 2018 study “the proportion of patients who showed >50% seizure reduction ranged from 20 to 70% and the rate of seizure freedom ranged from 7 to 30%”

About Matthew Cress

Mr. Cress is a twenty-eight-year-old French Dietician who is originally from Michigan but now works in France. You can reach out to Mr. Cress via Twitter @MattCressKeto. We asked Mr. Cress to provide a little more about himself and here’s his response:

Growing up, I’ve always been surrounding by an interest in the food and health field due to my family’s athletic background (I was a competitive gymnast). I actually started off in school learning to become a pastry chef and learned french to help with the terminology. After, I realized that it wasn’t pastry but nutrition and french that passioned me. I transferred my credits to Western Michigan University where I got my degree in French and then I moved to Lyon, France to continue my education in Nutrition where I became a dietitian.

During my dietetics internships, I had a mentor that introduced me to the ketogenic diet and to fasting. I found the ketogenic diet super interesting so I kept with it. When I started off, I had more clients that just wanted to use the keto diet to lose weight, but as I got better and better I started having more clients that needed help managing specific problems with the ketogenic diet, notably epilepsy.
