What You Should Already Know
- A Focal Seizure is one that hits one or more locations on one side of the brain.
- A Generalized Seizure is one that encompasses both sides of the brain.
What You’ll Learn
Common symptoms of a Focal seizure are:
- staring
- chewing
- swallowing
- clenching of the jaw
- grinding their teeth
- sensations like Deja Vu
The Generalized Seizure class can be broken down further into:
- Absence: common in children this difficult to diagnose as it is commonly mistaken for daydreaming..
- Tonic: causes muscles to suddenly stiffen.
- Atonic: causes muscles to suddenly relax Also called “drop seizures”.
- Myoclonic – a sudden jerk of the limbs.
- Clonic – a rhymic jerking of the body.
The Epilepsy Community is in the middle of a great migration with the definition of their nomenclature.
